Prepare the Way

To whom are you pointing this Advent season? There are a number of famous paintings in the art world that depict John the Baptist pointing to Jesus. One such painting even shows John with an inordinately long pointer finger, to emphasize the fact that it was John's one and only job to point to Jesus.

To whom are you pointing this Advent season? In other words, who or what is most important to you right now. Maybe you're pointing to the government for help and protection. Maybe you're pointing toward your family to fulfill some of your unment needs. Maybe you're pointing to your co-worker, fixing some sort of blame on him or her.

But John always points us to Jesus at this time of year. Jesus is the very "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." He is the One who works repentance in our hearts. He is the One who comes to forgive our sins and give us new life. He is really the only One who helps and protects, who fills our unment needs, and who takes all our blame through His sacrificial death.

All of this is why we, too, have long pointer fingers in this Advent season. It is our blessed vocation to point to Jesus. To show Him and share Him with others. To lead the way in proclaiming Him as Savior of this terribly fallen world.

Pray for our church, that each Mt. Calvary member would point to Jesus in any and every situation. Bring others to worship on Sundays and Wednesdays, so that they will find favor and forgiveness in the One to whom we point. Tell others about Jesus, the One who deserves all attention, glory, and praise.
